The reason we don't see poverty in the US like in other countries is because of our social safety net programs.
Unfortunately, the same programs that prevent poverty also PERPETUATE poverty.
Circles USA is a non profit addressing poverty in the United States. The work to help people overcome the "cliff effect". "The Cliff Effect occurs when a pay raise at work triggers a disproportionate loss of government assistance. Even a small raise can “push people off the cliff” when it comes to benefits. Suddenly ineligible for subsidized food, housing, healthcare, or childcare, the family is worse off than before receiving the raise." (Circles USA)
When someone is offered a raise at work, but the raise will actually reduce their financial well-being, they are disincentivized to accept the offer. The gap in increased pay vs previous benefits is often significant.
Circles works to provide individuals with social assets to escape poverty. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, everywhere I have lived I have found community and friendship. These friendships can provide an indirect financial benefit to its members. Having connections makes it easier to find a job. For working moms, having someone to call on if I child needs picked up from school during work hours etc. is super helpful. Unfortunately, many people don't have this type of community to rely on. Circles works to connect low income families into middle and upper income families. Having a mentor can prove invaluable.
Addressing poverty here and abroad are worthwhile endeavors. It's important to understand the difference between poverty here and there. I help local charities dedicated to helping the poor by donating and shopping at our local thrift stores. These stores provide food to those in need. They also give vouchers for clothing.
Poverty in the US is considered relative poverty. Relative to others in their community they have less; less food, less clothing etc. Poverty in Honduras can be classified as "absolute" poverty meaning they lack adequate shelter, drinking water, food, healthcare etc. There are no safety net programs. No medicaid, no food stamps etc.
In our efforts to reduce poverty, we often create more problems like dependency.
We have found that access to education and business credit are ways to help poor people without negatively impacting their self worth and motivation to be self reliant.
